Storm Win Division 1 Opener

Storm got their season off to a winning start away at Predators.

The 54-27 scoreline doesn’t tell the full story though as Storm dominated for three quarters before letting the home side back in the game in the last.

With a starting seven that featured two Under 16 players and two Under 18 players, the visitors took an early 5-1 lead.

The shooting partnership of Emily Coltman and Caitlyn Oates missed just one attempt at goal in the period as Storm led 16-7 at the first break.

It was more of the same as the second quarter continued in the same vein with the visitors scoring another 16 to lead 32-11 at half time.

The defensive unit of Rebecca Thompson, Natalie Peperell and Rachel Botterill was turning plenty of ball and with Coltman and Oates in good form under the posts, Storm extended their lead to 46-17 at three quarter time.

Predators hit back at the start of the final quarter though as some sloppy errors crept into Storm’s game.

The home side led 7-0 at the start of the period before Storm got back on the scoresheet with a run of four without reply.

Predators sunk three more before Storm finished the game with five on the trot to take their first win of the Division One season 54-27.

Head Coach David White was pleased with the performance; “Overall, we’ve got to be happy with the result and we were certainly very good for three quarters of the game,” he said.

“I was delighted with Phoebe Lagor who played at centre for the first time. She’s one of our Under 16s and played at a great intensity throughout the match.”

Both shooters recorded stats of over 79% and the defence turned over plenty of ball in the defensive areas.

“I thought Caitlyn and Emily played very well together in the circle, supported outside by Alice and Phoebe, who fed the circle well but were patient when they needed to be,” said White.

“Rebecca and Natalie had a great first game together too and I’m looking forward to seeing how the defensive unit develops throughout the season.”

Storm now have a fairly big break until the first team plays again with the next match the first home game of the season when Saints Futures visit Carn Brea on Friday, November 18th.
