The first ever Carn Brea Storm Netball Festival was a huge success with a packed Leisure Centre enjoying an afternoon of sport and dance.

The club staged three netball matches plus there were displays from Gazelles Gym Club and Redyouth along with sideline support from West Coast Cheerleaders.

Redruth Radio helped create a great atmosphere in the main hall as the entertainment was non stop all afternoon.

The three matches were all pre-season friendlies and were a great chance for the girls to get themselves ready for the new season which starts this Friday.

First up were the U14 & U13 players (plus an U12!) who took on Penzance, this was followed by Storm's U16 team The Hurricanes who played Falcons and the day concluded with Carn Brea Storm against St Agnes.

Head Coach David White said it was a good run-out for the players; "I was really pleased with how the day went and especially the games. The girls got a good chance to play together again and it was great to see them out on court and how they're shaping up for the new season."

The First team played St Agnes and Captain Maggie Moore said it was an enjoyable game to play in; "It was a really good game, very enjoyable. Everybody played really well and it was lovely to come out and just play a game that we can enjoy. Credit to St Agnes who gave us a very competitive game."

The Hurricanes were accompanied during their match by West Coast Cheerleaders who were chanting and dancing on the sidelines every time the girls scored. They played Falcons and Hurricanes Captain Beth Thomas said it was a great day for the club; "The atmosphere was really good and I think the girls dealt with it really well. The Cheerleaders were good and the crowd were excellent and the music's good encouragement, we like that!"

The Festival was staged in association with Carn Brea Leisure Centre and Manager, Barry Holding, was thrilled with how the day went; "I think it's been a great success, I'm amazed at how many people have turned up for all of the different things we've had going on today it's been a really good success. I think it's been good for the Leisure Centre and great for netball in general, it's got a lot of people interested in netball again."

Gazelles Gym Club put on two excellent displays including one that took place on a blow up runway where the gymnasts were able to perform various moves at high speed.

Redyouth also performed some displays with their teams, Unbreakable and Quickstep. Their choreographer is former Flava dancer Jen Haley who said the day was fantastic; "It was great, we did three performances, the crowd were absolutely brilliant, it was a fantastic day, all the players did absolutely great. I was here from the first game so well done to everybody."

The day was also a chance to raise some more money for charity with Shelterbox and The Phoenix Stroke Appeal benefitting this year.

"The money is still being counted but it's looking like we're going to have raised around £500 which is a fantastic effort from everyone", said Club secretary Sadie White.

"I'd like to thank everyone who gave their time for free to help the club out. To the Leisure Centre, all the umpires, all our guest performers, the visiting teams who came to play us, Andrew for the photos, Simon for the interviews and of course all the officials, timers and scorers who helped the day go so smoothly."

So with this years Festival being given a big vote of approval by everyone Barry Holding is already looking forward to the next one; "I can't wait for this season to start . Having Storm here is a great thing for us and I can't wait for next years Festival. We'll definitely have another one!"
