Storm 1 Get Season Underway With A Win!
Story: 4th November, 2009, 23:27 | Words: Storm NC | Photos: Andrew Trenoweth

Storm 1 got the club's new Cornwall League season underway with a win after beating Newquay 1 49-28.

Newquay made the brighter start and took an early two goal lead after both of Storm's shooters missed their opening opportunities.

They soon found the net though and Storm led 12-7 after the first quarter.

The second was a lot closer but Storm edged it 9-7 to take a 21-14 lead into the half time break.

Storm Head Coach David White admitted the team took a while to settle down, "I think we got off to a bit of a slow start but that's to be expected. It's our first league game and only the second time this team has played together. Once we got going though I thought we started to play some good netball."

Emma Heller was rested in the third quarter with Hailey Collins moving back to Wing Defence and Saira O'Dwyer coming on at Wing Attack.

Storm took control of the game in the next 15 minutes after some resolute defensive work from Lisa Budd and Maggie Moore in the circle.

In the attacking circle Betsy Willey scored 8 out of 8 as her partnership with Sadie White started to flourish with Storm taking the quarter 15-6.

Emma Heller came back on for Hailey Collins in the last period and made some great interceptions as Storm continued the good form winning the last 13-8 to take the match 49-28.

White was pleased with the work the whole team put in, "I thought everyone worked hard when we had the ball and even harder when we didn't to get it back!"

"Defensively we were great, Maggie and Lisa in the circle are really working well together and that gives the rest of the team confidence. They won all but two rebounds all night and both had some great interceptions to disrupt the Newquay attack."

Storm Captain Sharon Teague, speaking on Storm Radio after the match, was delighted with the win, "We all worked hard as a team, first game of the season you never really know what's going to happen especially going up to Division 2 but I think we all gelled together and it was an amazing result."

Goal Attack Betsy Willey shot 29 out of 32 (90%) and she feels the team morale is good going into the new season, "I loved it! There was a great atmosphere out on court. Everyone really wanted to win it and we did which was amazing and by a really good score as well."

She feels the team is getting better the more they play together, "Oh definately, especially with the pre-season training we've been having and the two weeks after the Bodmin match we've all gelled a lot more and have got more set plays so we know where we're all going."

Storm 1's next match is the Cornwall Cup Quarter Final against first division team Bodmin. The match is at Penryn College at 2.30.
