Storm Shelterbox Challenge!
Story: 19th January, 2010, 18:38 | Words: Storm NC
Storm has taken on a challenge to try and raise enough money to buy a Shelterbox to aid the recovery from the devastation caused by the recent earthquake in Haiti.
The first ShelterBoxes have already arrived in Port au
Prince but hundreds more are needed.
The ShelterBox Response Team of David Eby (US),
Wayne Robinson (US) and Mark Pearson (UK), who have been in Haiti’s capital
since Thursday, took delivery of the first ShelterBoxes at Port au Prince
airport on Monday 18th January.
The team say twelve of these boxes will be used
to build an emergency hospital at the airport.
"We are helping build a field hospital with
these tents at the airport," said Mark Pearson. "These are desperate conditions,
amputations are happening every half hour. There’s an urgent need for tents at
hospitals and this is our first priority."
ShelterBox Head of Operations John Leach said:
"We are working with the agencies on the ground to ensure
that ShelterBoxes are not only distributed speedily and efficiently, but that
our team on the ground is able to work in a safe environment."
So Storm has decided to try and raise enough money to help purchase one of the boxes.
The cost of the box, all the contents plus the transportation is £490 and the club will be trying to raise this amount by Wednesday, 24th February.
Club secretary, Sadie White, is confident the club can reach the target: "Looking at the devastation on television we felt we had to do something to try and help these unfortunate people caught up in the disaster and I'm sure we can get enough money by hook or by crook to send another box out there."
Shelterbox is a charity started almost 10 years ago in Helston by the local Rotary club and last year Storm got involved in the Camborne Rotary Club "Climb Everest Up Carn Brea" event that also raised money for the charity.
ShelterBox Founder and CEO Tom Henderson said:
"The devastation in Haiti has moved everyone here. We now have our boxes on the
ground and it’s a privilege to help. The scale of devastation is huge.
By the sheer grit and determination of our
staff and volunteers we have been able to respond in record time."
So how can you help? Well, the easiest thing you can do is to turn up to one of our games and drop a donation into our green bucket! It's going to be at all of our games between now and the February 24th.
Alternatively you could send a cheque, made payable to "SHELTERBOX", to:

Remember, we've only got until February 24th to get £490. Every penny counts and you can follow our progress on our chart below. As more money comes in the Shelterbox will gradually fill up until the whole box is green.
Please help us if you can. Thank you! |
