Joining Information

Congratulations, you’ve taken a big step towards becoming a member of one of Cornwall’s premier sports clubs! Whether you want to play netball competitively, for fitness or just to be part of a vibrant and successful sports club, we are confident Storm is the perfect place for you!

With top quality coaching and a first rate support and sponsorship team behind the club, Storm is the ideal choice to continue, begin or improve your enjoyment of the game.

Storm welcomes players of all abilities to the club. All we ask is that you are dedicated and enthusiastic about playing the game!

For more serious players however there are our four league teams to aim for. Members of all our teams must be committed to achieving their best and striving to do their best for the team. First team players must be especially dedicated as extra team training sessions take place throughout the season separate to the main evenings.

In fact, you don’t even need to play in our league teams to train with us, you are more than welcome to join and just come along, enjoy playing the game and be part of a successful, friendly and sociable club.

Younger players are catered for in the Junior section of the club. Again players of all abilities are more than welcome to train with us whether you’ve been playing netball at school or not. Junior training is for young players aged 9-14 (school years 5-9). Year 10’s & 11’s train with our Seniors.

With Storm being so successful we need to ensure we have space available in certain training sessions so please make sure you contact us BEFORE turning up to training. We can then let you know which session will be best for you to attend. Just drop us an email from our contact page and let us know you want to try out a FREE session!

We always allow everyone to try a session with us for free first of all before they make up their mind about joining.

How much is it to join and what do I get for my money?

Storm has an annual club membership system which runs from June to April inclusive. More about this can be found on our Membership Page. This includes all your training sessions plus extra fitness sessions, all match kit for players selected for our league teams, attendance to any of our workshops we run throughout the year and attendance at any of our social events we run.

We have easy payment plans where members can pay monthly by standing order or if you prefer you can pay annually. This works out at amazing value for money as all training sessions, matches and match kit is included in this one payment.

The only extra that members pay is affiliation to England Netball, which is a fee that every netball player in England must pay from Pamela Cookey (England Goal Attack) down to someone just starting out in the game!

This fee is to cover players and coaches with the England Netball insurance policy and must be paid to England whether just training with a club or playing matches.

The England Netball fees for the 2016/17 season are:

Over 18: £40
Under 18: £30
Under 14: £20
Under 12: £10

Storm has no say on these fees, they are set by England Netball Head Office, Netball South West and Cornwall Netball.

Is there a load of expensive kit I have to buy?

The easy answer to that is NO! Players selected for one of our nine Senior and Junior teams get all match kit supplied FREE. That includes a match dress sponsored by KHK Media and for Senior players, new technical warm up shirts sponsored by the Wheal Jane Group.

We do of course have all sorts of goodies in our club shop but initially all you need to worry about is the Storm Membership Fee and England Netball Affiliation.

You may wish to buy yourself a decent pair of sports trainers. If you need some advice on how to select the correct pair for your feet then take a look at our Trainer Guide.

Great, what do I do now?

Well quite simple really, just get in touch with us, tell us you want to come and we’ll look forward to seeing you on court!

It’s important you get in touch with us before coming purely so we can direct you to the correct session for you and to make sure there hasn’t been a last minute change of training schedule due to a game being rearranged or something similar.

So head on over to our contact page and drop us an email. We’d love to see you!

Training and matches for 2016/2017

Our Senior training takes place at different times to ensure all players get the maximum benefit from the sessions. The reason we do this is simply so every team trains together and individual players can train at a level that best suits them.

For instance we wouldn’t want a player who is fresh back to netball after a ten year break coming straight back in and training at a high intensity with our first team.

This also means training groups are smaller and our coaches can work much more closely with units and individuals on particular skills and tactics.

But I don’t want to play I just love netball, can I still be involved?

Of course, the club is always grateful for volunteers who would like to help out in any way. Our volunteers help with things like being the official match scorer, keeping the scoreboard up to date during matches, ensuring our equipment and training balls are looked after and safe during games, looking after the girls water bottles that type of thing. You could even become one of the club’s Duty of Care Officers as there’s no limit to the amount we can have.

If you’d like to become a volunteer or find out more information about joining Storm just get in touch via our contact page.

Meet Our Sponsors

Storm is proud to be associated with some terrific sponsors who enable us to continue to push the club forward.

Sponsorship is a vital part of the club achieving its goals and can be a fulfilling role for a business to work alongside and ambitious and forward thinking club like Carn Brea Storm.

We are very lucky to be associated with the following companies. Please click on the links to go direct to their website. And if you’d like to join our sponsorship team please get in touch via our contact page.

Wheal Jane Group
www.wheal-jane.co.uk

Wheal Jane Group became Storm’s warm up shirt sponsor at the start of the 2012/13 season and features on the club’s Under Armour shirts the Senior teams and U16 team wear.

Wheal Jane Group was formed in 1998 following the end of tin mining in Cornwall and keeps up the tradition the club has with tin mining with Storm being located at the heart of Cornwall’s mining district.

Bernard Ballard, Director of Wheal Jane Group, explained why the company wanted to help the club move forward. “I’ve watched the club develop rapidly over the past seven years and grow into a leading Cornish and South West sports club,” he said. “With both of my daughters playing I’ve developed a strong interest in the sport as a result of the vibrancy of Storm.”

KHK Media
www.khkmedia.co.uk

Storm’s Senior and U16 Team play in KHK Media sponsored dresses after the photography company run by Andrew Trenoweth agreed a new sponsorship deal at the start of the 2012/13 season.

No stranger to the club, Andrew started working with Storm in 2008. Then In 2009 KHK Media sponsored the team with a set of match balls, and in 2010 become a main team sponsor providing the senior teams with match dresses and team jackets for the support staff.

In 2012 they have continued their commitment to the club by helping to provide new Under Armour match dresses for the four senior teams and U16 Tornadoes.

“I am delighted to continue working with Storm,” Andrew said. “The club has grown incredibly in the last few years and it is a pleasure to be able to help Storm continue to push forward. I take great pride in seeing the players and officials look so professional and I think it has really helped raise the profile of Storm Netball Club.”

As part of the sponsorship deal KHK Media will continue to supply the club with match and social event photography and it’s something Andrew has has enjoyed doing for the past five seasons. “The last few years have been amazing and I’ve been able to experience some incredible matches and events first hand,” he said.

Storm’s Award Winning Junior section caters for young players of all abilities and players can join us from age 9 (school year 5). Once players reach school year 10 (14-15) they are able to train with our full senior teams if selected.

Storm’s junior section is one of Cornwall’s most successful and we pride ourselves on the way we develop our young players both on and off the court.

However, everyone has to start somewhere and we realise how difficult it can be to come to a brand new club, only knowing a few people and trying to find your feet straight away but we can guarantee a warm welcome and a friendly group of players and coaching staff.

All players receive quality coaching from England Netball qualified coaches and are trained in all aspects of the game. Our Head Coach, David White, is Joint Head Coach at Team Bath Futures (U17s) and was awarded Cornwall Performance and Development Coach of the Year in 2012.

As with our Seniors, our junior training is safe and enjoyable. We ensure there are always at least two coaches at every session along with qualifed first aid personnel and Duty of Care officers.

We like to ensure players enjoy the game whilst learning and our training sessions are designed with age and ability in mind.

How do I join and how much does it cost?

With Storm being so successful we need to ensure we have space available in certain training sessions so please make sure you contact us BEFORE turning up to training. We can then let you know which session will be best for you to attend. Just drop us an email from our contact page and let us know you want to try out a FREE session!

We always allow everyone to try a session with us for free first of all before they make up their mind about joining.

Once you’ve decided that you want to join, our membership fees are paid monthly by standing order or if you prefer, and some people do, you can pay for the entire year in one payment. A detailed breakdown of our club fees and payment options can be found in our Membership section. Please note there is no option to pay weekly.

For all players who are taking part in our U14 and U12 sessions there is a one time fee of £9 on joining, this gives you a club performance training shirt which is to be worn at all training sessions.

The only other expense is England Netball Affiliation which every netball player in England has to pay. This is a fee set by England Netball and the club has no say in how much it is. You will get the England Netball magazine through the post and when you affiliate it means you are covered by the England Netball Insurance Policy. More details about this fee is on our Joining Page.

Click here to download a Player Registration Form for joining Storm. If you wish you can print this out, fill it in and bring it to the training session. A parent or guardian will need to sign the form and please ensure you’ve checked and signed the Photography Consent section on page two.

Sadie White is the Junior Team Manager and our U16 Administrator, Bev Filkins is the Senior players’ Administrator and Jo White looks after the U12s. Any of them are your first point of contact if you have any queries. Feel free to come and talk to Sadie, Sharon, Bev or Jo at training. They will be able to answer all your questions and give you any forms you may need. Sharon, Jo and Bev all have daughters in our Seniors who’ve all come through the club’s Junior section and one of our Junior Coaches, Saira O’Dwyer also had a daughter in the club so they can answer any questions you may have from first hand experience of being a Mum!

What do I need to bring to a training session?

Please ensure you have a bottle of water or similar to enable you to keep hydrated during the training session. Also make sure you have the correct footwear. We encourage the wearing of sports trainers! We know fashion trainers might look better but for playing netball you need to make sure you are wearing a decent pair of trainers designed for sport. We can’t stress this enough, if you are planning to train with us for any length of time, and we hope you do, then please get yourself a good pair of sports trainers if you haven’t got any already. Trust us, your feet will thank you!! We’ve even got a guide to buying the right trainers on our site. Click here to have a read through.

A skort (netball skirt with built in lycra shorts) or a pair of shorts with the club t-shirt are preferable for training in. You may also need a small towel to wipe away any perspiration.

Matchplay

Junior players that are selected for our club teams participate in the Cornwall Junior League. Match dresses are provided for players who are selected to play for our league teams.

Storm Fundraising

Get involved in our fundraising events and help raise money for the club and some great charities!

As a club Storm has raised money for various Cornish charities including Shelterbox, The Phoenix Stroke Appeal, The Sunrise Appeal and Cornish Hospice South West.

Our Fundraising Committee oversees all our events and is continually meeting to discuss new ways to raise funds which go directly back into the club or straight to the charity of our choice.

The Orange Aid Book Shelf!

We are pleased that Rachel has found us a bookshelf and it’s been installed it in the Zest Cafe at Carn Brea Leisure Centre. If you’re an avid reader why not pop along and see what books we’ve got. You can grab yourself a book for just 50p, read it then bring it back and change it for another one! You can’t miss the bookshelf, Rachel’s even painted it bright orange!

Partnership With Macmillan Cancer Support!

We are pleased to be raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support as our charity partner for 2014. We launched the partnership at our Christmas Gift & Craft Fayre in December 2013 and are looking forward to raising money througout the year. That means you’ll see plenty of Macmillan green alongside the Storm orange at our club events and matches.

Storm Monthly 50/50 Draw

If you are interested in taking part in our monthly 50/50 draw and help raise money for club funds then download an application form on this link and return it to Richard Hocking or Sadie White who administer the draw. It’s only £2 per number .. that’s less than a Latte a month!!
