Storm record an impressive win on the road in Regional League 3 (South).

Storm took all the points in an exciting 67-52 victory away to Somerset side Sydenham Gems to move into third place in the league.

The win makes it two out of two at the start of the new Regional 3 season.

The visitors, starting with the line up that finished against Tor Knights last weekend, put in two high intensity quarters, recording scores of 20-10 and 20-9 to lead 40-19 at half time.

“I thought our first half play was extremely good,” said Head Coach David White. “We really went for it in the first half, turned a lot of ball in defence and our shooters were in great form.”

Cerise Lauder, Rebecca Thompson and Kirstin Lamb worked tirelessly in defence to turnover ball as Storm limited the home side’s shooting opportunities.

In the shooting circle Hannah Cox and Caitlyn Oates shared the goals as Storm built a comfortable lead by half time.

Maia Adams replaced Lamb at Wing Defence in the third quarter as the home side hit back to take the period but still trailed 53-36 .

White made two more changes at three quarter time as Niamh Symons came on at Goal Keeper, Lauder moved to Goal Defence and Esme Adams came on at Wing Defence.

“It was great to get everyone on court this week,” said White. “I thought we were good value for our win but with still plenty to work on at training this week.”

Storm got their Regional League season off to a winning start in a thrilling match at home to Tor Knights.

It’s the first time the club has played at Senior Regional League level after previously competing at U16 and U14 Regional Level.

It’s also the first matchday weekend in the new South West Division 3 (South) which was created this season.

The opening exchanges went goal for goal until the visitors stretched out an early 9-4 lead.

Storm took a few minutes to gel in a new line up that was taking to the court for the first time but gradually got back in to the game to level the scores 15-15 at first quarter break.

Storm switched around the circle defence pairing of Rebecca Thompson (Goal Keeper) and Cerise Lauder (Goal Defence) for the second quarter to try and combat the balls into the circle.

It seemed to work with Knights shooting opportunities restricted in the next period.

Storm got off to a good start scoring 5 without reply to take a 20-15 lead and continued to put the pressure on finishing the quarter 20-7 to lead 35-22 at half time.

The next period was much tighter as Knights got back into their stride and they took the quarter 14-12 to close the game to 11 going into the last.

The game got a little scrappy in the last period with both sides making unforced errors. Knights piled on the pressure though and two 3-goal runs brought the score back to a nerve-wracking 52-48 to the home side with four minutes left the play.

Then shooter Caitlyn Oates sunk a long bomb which energised the home side into a run of four consecutive goals which proved enough to see out the game 57-50 and record the club’s first victory in the Regional League.

Head Coach David White was delighted to get the first win: “I thought we were going to let it slip away right at the end until we put that little run together but I’m so pleased we’ve got our season off to a winning start.”

“There was certainly a lot of good stuff that we did but there’s of course some things we’ll need to look at in training and try and get better at before our next game.”
